  • Ahl Ahlsen Født i Halden 28 apr.1868 sønn av garver Olaus Ahlsen(f.1.aug 1 aug. 1836 d.21.aug. 1888) og Oline Olsdatter(f.25
    febr. 1839- d. l aug. 1920).

    Etter avsluttet folkeskole kom han i pølsemakerlære hos pølsemaker Martin Johannessen. Etter utstått læretid var
    han noen måneder i Oslo. Men ved farens død;I888 reiste han hjem.

    I ca. 1 år bestyrte han et pølsemakeri for landhandler Kirkerud på Bjerkebekk i Aretnark. En kortere tid arbeidet han i samme
    bransje i Mellerud, Sverige .

    I 1895 sluttet han sompølsemaker og tok arbeid ved Fredr. Hald. Telefonselskap Her ble han formann i 1904 og
    denne stilling hadde han til 1917. Han fikk da arbeide ved telefonanlegget på Rjukan. Han ble der bare ett år.

    Han lengtet tilbake til fødebyen. og flyttet derfor tilbake til Halden igjen. Fra 1919 arbeidet han som
    materialforvalter ved Berg elektr.verk. I 1922 ble han ansatt i firmaet A/S Haldens Skotøyfabrikk, og her arbeidet
    han til høsten 1940 som vaktmann og hjelpearbeider på snekkerverkstedet. Fra 191,1 var han eier av Jørgen
    Bjelkes gate 10.

    I sine yngre år syslet han adskillig med jakt, vesentlig harejakt Han hadde stor interesse fur hunder. Hans far var i
    sin tid kjent som en dyktig jeger, og etter ham overtok han harehunden 'Munter' som han solte til godseier P.M.
    Anker. Denne hunden ble stamfar til de nå så bekjente 'Haldenstøvere'.

    A. var ivrig binæringsmann. Formann i Halden og omegns binæringsforening 1926 - 35. Ved utstillinger oppnådde
    han flere premier og medaljer. Ble tildelt Østfold Binæringsforbunds medalje for fortjenestefullt arbeide for saken

    Hans fornemste hobby var imidlertid sangen. Allerede som 10-årsgammel gutt var han korgutt under Reissiger. I
    ung alder sluttet han seg til baptistmenigheten. Han var stadig medlem av menighetens kor, og var fast solist. I
    1915 var han med og stiftet 'Brødrekoret Evangelisten'.

    Også her var han fast solist og var i mango år korets formann. Aktivt medlem av dette til sin død. Han døde 9 mars
    1944.

Harold Ahlsen, a former longtime resident of Amityville and graduate of Amityville Schools, died Oct. 21, 2013 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, Maine. He was 90 years old and a resident of Cape Elizabeth, Maine since 1956.

His family described him as having lived a life full of love, laughter, joy, grace and devotion to family, friends, God and his church, community and country.

He was born April 5, 1923 in Brooklyn, the fourth son and fifth child of Norwegian immigrants, Hans Olaus Ahlsen of Halden and Bertha Susanna Hansen of Grimstad. The family moved to 32 Cedar Street, Amityville when he was an infant, where he attended Amityville schools until his graduation in 1940. His father died in a drowning accident when Mr. Ahlsen was 13.

After graduation, he worked for Barker Brothers Inc., in East New York, manufacturing spools. Enlisting in the Coast Guard in 1942, he served most of his time during WWII and was stationed in various places in Maine including Mount Desert Rock and the Coast Guard Station in South Portland. It was while stationed there that he met his future wife, Mabel Martin, at the local sandwich shop. Upon discharge in 1946, he worked for New York Telephone on Long Island. He returned to Maine to marry Mabel at the First Baptist Church in Portland on April 12, 1947. Together they moved to Amityville to live and raise their three children. Harold built his first house, a Cape Cod, at 59 Terry Avenue in 1951, with the help of a friend.

He served with the Amityville Fire Department from 1946-1956.

After moving back to Maine, he transferred employment to New England Telephone where he worked until his retirement in 1984 as an outside plant engineer.

Mr. Ahlsen loved boating and the sea. He bought his first boat in the early 70s, a 24-foot wooden powerboat named Ginger. He later bought a 32-foot Luhrs Cabin Cruiser, named Ellida after a mythological Norwegian sailing ship.

He served with the Cape Elizabeth Fire Dept from 1956-2000, serving for several years as captain of Engine One. He was also a driver for the Cape Elizabeth Rescue. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of South Portland since 1956, serving in many capacities, multiple times on boards and committees. He was honored as an Elder since 1989. He was also a member of Hiram Lodge #180, a Scottish Rite 32 degree Mason, a member of Kora Temple Shrine, the Legion of Honor and the Royal Order of Jesters for many years.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mabel Shirley Martin in 1998 and by his parents, three brothers, two sisters and all of their spouses. He is survived by his daughters, Karen A. Oswald and her husband Rudy of Naperville, IL; Nancy K. Ahlsen and her husband Rod Link of Cape Elizabeth; son H. Eric Ahlsen and his wife Nadine of Cape Elizabeth; three grandsons, Matthew and Lucas Ahlsen of Portland and Greg Oswald and his wife Jennifer of Plainfield, IL; two great-grandchildren, Garrett and Elyse Oswald and many nephews and nieces with all of their children and grandchildren, including his nephew Fred Nehring and his two children of Amityville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Harold’s favorite charity, the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Processing Center, P.O. Box 1510, Ranson, WV 25438-4510. Mr. Ahlsen reposed at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. A memorial service was held Nov. 9 at the First Congregational Church, 301 Cottage Road, South Portland. His cremains were buried in Riverside Memorial Cemetary in Cape Elizabeth Nov. 9.

He returned to Maine to marry Mabel at the First Baptist Church in Portland on April 12, 1947. Together they moved to Amityville to live and raise their three children. Harold built his first house, a Cape Cod, on Terry Avenue in 1951, with the help of a friend. Missing the lifestyle of Maine and the beautiful Portland area, Harold moved his family back to Cape Elizabeth in 1956, residing on Rocky Knoll Road. He transferred employment to New England Telephone where he worked until his retirement in 1984 as an Outside Plant Engineer. It would become a family joke that Harold starting working for the phone company on April Fool's Day and retired on Halloween. Harold and Mabel moved to Wells Road in 1990. As he did with their first and second house, Harold used his talent for carpentry and home improvement to make continual improvements to their home. A favorite indulgence of Harold's was boating and the sea. His bought his first boat in the early 70's, a 24' wooden powerboat named Ginger. He later bought a 32' Luhrs Cabin Cruiser, named Ellida after a mythological Norwegian sailing ship. Harold spent many happy hours sailing Casco Bay and mooring at Diamond and Cliff Islands with his family and friends. He was a member of Centerboard Yacht Club. He and good friend Dick Ingalls shared a dock at Marine East for many years. A commitment to service was another passion in Harold's life. He was a member of the Amityville NY Fire Dept from 1946-1956 and the Cape Elizabeth Fire Dept from 1956-2000, where he served for several years as Captain of Engine One. He was also a driver for the Cape Elizabeth Rescue. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of South Portland since 1956. He served the church in many capacities, serving multiple times on boards and committees. He was honored as an Elder since 1989. He would say his most important role in the church was a Sunday School Teacher and Youth Ministry Advisor. He was a member of Hiram Lodge #180, a Scottish Rite 32 degree Mason, a member of Kora Temple Shrine, the Legion of Honor and the Royal Order of Jesters for many years. He was elected to receive the Scottish Rite Meritorious Service Award in Sept 2005. He was a past member of the Cape Elizabeth Lions Club, the Centerboard Yacht Club and the American Legion Post 152 in Cape Elizabeth. He was predeceased by his wife, Mabel Shirley Martin, who passed away January 1, 1998, his parents, three brothers, two sisters and all of their spouses. He is survived by his loving family: daughters Karen A Oswald and her husband Rudy of Naperville IL; Nancy K Ahlsen and her husband Rod Link of Cape Elizabeth; son H Eric Ahlsen and his wife Nadine of Cape Elizabeth; three grandsons Matthew and Lucas Ahlsen of Portland and Greg Oswald and his wife Jennifer of Plainfield IL; two great grandchildren Garrett and Elyse Oswald; and many nephews and nieces with all of their children and grandchildren.
